The Military Maritime Consultative Agreement Working Group meeting was held in Honolulu on Wednesday and Thursday this week. A family of four needs to make more than $275,000 to live comfortably in some of the most expensive U.S. cities, a recent SmartAsset analysis reveals. "Comfortable" is defined as the income needed to cover a 50/30/20 budget for a family of two adults and two kids. That's followed by other cities known for having notoriously expensive housing costs, including Boston, New York City, Honolulu and Los Angeles. Out of all 99 cities SmartAsset examined, a family of four would need a median of $226,886 to live comfortably. HONOLULU (AP) — Local officials in Hawaii next month plan to open an office that will speed up Maui County's notoriously slow processing of building permits to help the town of Lahaina to recover from last year's deadly wildfire. The new permitting center will help private developers building five separate projects with a combined total of more than 500 housing units. The Federal Emergency Management Agency is building 169 temporary housing units for displaced residents and is renting 1,300 units from landlords. The state of Hawaii is building about 450 temporary housing units, including 270 that will be ready by July or August. The state's temporary units are expected to be used for three to five years.

It pains me to witness the modern-day devaluation of the arts and humanities. When I was a child, my art history major mother dragged me to many of the world’s great museums: the National Gallery of Art, the Met, the Louvre. I may have protested after the first hour, but certain works left indelible impressions: the terrifying passion of Klimt’s “Kiss,” the seductive movement of the Calder mobile. Likewise, literature plunged me into different perspectives.

(Reuters) -Utility firm Hawaiian Electric said on Tuesday it had begun rolling outages on Hawaii Island due to the unavailability and reduced output from several large generators. The Honolulu-based power company said its largest generator, Hamakua Energy, unexpectedly tripped offline late Tuesday afternoon and Puna Geothermal Venture was operating at a reduced capacity. Hawaiian Electric added one of its combustion turbines had tripped offline on Tuesday evening on the island, which contains the towns of Hilo and Kona. 5, Keahole CT-5, and Puna Steam Plant also are unavailable due to planned annual maintenance or repairs. Hawaiian Electric said the timing and extent of the outages would depend on the amount of demand on the system and the availability of generators.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is investigating an outbreak on a luxury cruise ship after more than 150 people reported symptoms of gastrointestinal illness, including diarrhea and vomiting. The ship, the Queen Victoria, operated by Cunard Line, departed Southampton, England, on Jan. 11 on a 107-night cruise that included recent stops in Florida and San Francisco, according to the company’s website. said that, as of Thursday, 129 passengers and 25 crew members had reported being ill on the ship. The agency said 1,824 passengers and 967 crew members were aboard at the time of the outbreak. In a statement, Cunard Line, which is based in Southampton, said that “a number of guests had reported symptoms of gastrointestinal illness” on the ship, which arrived in San Francisco on Tuesday after stops in Mexico, Guatemala, Panama and Aruba.

HONOLULU (AP) — A 60-year-old man sailing from California to Hawaii arrived in the islands over the weekend, the U.S. Coast Guard said Monday, one day after it asked the public for help finding him. Noel Rubio arrived safely with his 32-foot sailboat (9.7-meter) sailboat Malulani on Saturday, the Coast Guard said in a statement.
